Living La Vida Hygge

When’s the last time you learned something new and thought “where have you been my whole life?” That is how I feel about Hygge (pronounced hoo-guh)! This lifestyle comes from Denmark, often labeled the happiest country on Earth. What excites me about discovering Hygge is I try to live by its tenets already, without knowing this word existed. I’m looking forward to now putting more of it into practice and furthering my Hygge-fied environment. So what is Hygge? It’s contentment. Living in the moment. Simplicity with an abundance of coziness. Creating a light (think lots of candles!) and welcoming space to gather with friends and family. Creating community. Potting plants and bringing fresh flowers into your home to appreciate life and color. Going into work early so you can leave at 5 and enjoy the daylight.

Want to learn more about this lifestyle? I’ve gathered my top 3 favorite articles about Hygge to give you a diverse and informative collection of sources.

One of my favorite things about Hustle Mom Hustle is expanding my community. In learning about Hygge I came across Hurds & Honey and felt an instant connection as I read through her blog. Spring is approaching, so this post about Spring Hygge (keeping things cozy) is quite timely.

For a hilarious and educational read, experience a week of practicing Hygge in Manhattan in this Buzzfeed post.

For something a little more “scientific,” check out this Business Insider interview with Meik Wiking, CEO of The Happiness Institute in Copenhagen.

Now put your phones and computers down and go take a walk outside. But first you may want to change out of your Hyggebukser – those oh so amazingly worn and comfy pants that probably shouldn’t be seen in public. You have a pair you say? Then you’re already on your way to a Hygge lifestyle.
