New to Country

When J was born I started listening to country music.  It was something I’d listened to before, but never regularly.  I had the stations in my car tuned to Top 40, Oldies and a Local Station that played just about everything.  As I crossed the threshold into motherhood, there was just something instinctive about making the change to country.  Even if the lyrics were about partying or a woman’s revenge, the melody was calm and the chorus always seemed sunny. One thing I noticed though, was I was crying a lot more when I listened to the radio.  Coming off the hormone roller coaster that was pregnancy and postpartum it was easy to think that it was just me being me and unregulated. Even before I was expecting again, this trend continued. I’d joke (and still do) that this is the new me: Emotional over someone else’s heartbreak, plotted revenge or just plain because, man that’s a great song.

There is something to country deep down though and once I stopped trying to hold back the waterworks, I noticed that some songs just spoke to me.  With everything going on right now, there is one song I will listen to on good days or bad, that just reminds me to keep going and to be proud of ‘all the things’ – big, small, happy and sad, because dang it, I’m female.  Thank you to Nicolle Ann Gaylon, Ross Cooperman and Shane Mcannally for writing this amazing song and to Keith Urban for bringing it to life. Never have the tears flowed so freely as when I’m in my car alone and this song comes on.  If you haven’t heard Female take a minute, country fan or not.

When you hear somebody say somebody hits like a girl

How does that hit you?

Is that such a bad thing?

When you hear a song that they play saying you run the world

Do you believe it?

Will you live to see it?

Sister, shoulder

Daughter, lover

Healer, broken halo

Mother nature

Fire, suit of armor

Soul survivor, Holy Water

Secret keeper, fortune teller

Virgin Mary, scarlet letter

Technicolor river wild

Baby girl, women shine

Female

When somebody laughs and implies that she asked for it

Just ’cause she was wearing a skirt

Oh is that how it works?

When somebody talks about how it was Adam first

Does that make you second best?

Or did he save the best for last?

Sister, shoulder

Daughter, lover

Healer, broken halo

Mother nature

Fire, suit of armor

Soul survivor, Holy Water

Secret keeper, fortune teller

Virgin Mary, scarlet letter

Technicolor river wild

Baby girl, women shine

Female

She’s the heart of life

She’s the dreamer’s dream

She’s the hands of time

She’s the queen of kings

Sister, shoulder

Daughter, lover

Healer, broken halo

Mother nature

Fire, suit of armor

Soul survivor, Holy Water

Secret keeper, fortune teller

Virgin Mary, scarlet letter

Technicolor river wild

Baby girl, women shine
