10 good things, 10 bad things, what are you going to choose to focus on?

Hey HMH Moms and Dads (We know you are out there! Hustling and getting it done!)

Happy Wednesday Y’All! Hope you all had an amazing holiday with your families and you were able to slow down a bit and relax before the spirit of the season kicks into high gear. You know what I am talking about! The Holiday Hustle is almost upon us. And it is the most wonderful time of the year, but Oh, Momma, I’m sure we all need a nap!

This week I was talking with an amazing woman I just met who inspired me to write my Wednesday blog! Don’t you just love when you meet someone new that inspires you and invigorates your soul. That’s how I felt the 2 times I have been in the same room as this amazing, dynamic woman!

We were talking about life and marriage and kiddos! You know, the usual. And her lil ones are younger than mine. I’m smack dab in the teenage years with two of my favorite three and it is a whole new ball game. I am no longer cool! And she is still in the “cool” phase where her lil ones think she walks on water. Oh, what fun! I remember those days!

I was telling her about something I used to say to my kids when they were little. There is so much that happens in a day and I think one of the most amazing parts of being human is we get to CHOOSE what we focus on! We truly get to make a decision to focus on the positive or the negative. And I know some days are harder than others, but I always try to remember and remind my three!

Here was how I phrased it to them, “Every single day there will be 10 amazing, wonderful things that happen and there will be 10 icky, horrible things that happen, and it is up to you to choose what you are going to focus on.” You could let the icky ones eat you up inside. You could focus on them and harbor them and replay them. And so many times we do. But if you make an effort, you can choose to highlight and focus on the 10 amazing, wonderful things that happen. The icky ones are definitely more sticky. But that’s just it, don’t let them be. When I would tuck them in at night I would ask them what the good ones were. What amazing thing happened today?

It’s a great reminder to me too. I think I gave them more of this when they were littler. (And weren’t rolling their eyes at me) And now that they are older, I think they may need it even more. I am going to go home tonight and make sure I remind them of this good advice. I think this was one of my parenting wins and just hope that it sticks. That’s all we can hope for is that somewhere along the way some of the good stuff sticks and some of the bad stuff rolls off.

It’s up to them. All I hope is that I am giving them a good foundation. Love leads the way for sure. And no one loves them more than me!

What’s your parenting win Momma? Let’s share our parenting wins! And throw some positive parenting glitter into the air! Cheers Mommas and Papas! Keep on keeping on!
