A Year of Pie

Delicious, yes.  Surprising, yes.  Joyful, hell yes.

Last November I set out to bake every pie in my newest cookbook: Easy as Pie.  It gave me something to work toward while doing something I enjoy. Bake 50 different pies in 52 weeks, sounds delicious, right?  What it sparked, motivated and brought me was something I definitely didn’t expect.  JOY.  Like turn it to 11 kinds of joy.

Sometimes it was just for me – the whole family nestled in their beds for the night, firing up the food processor, making crust, fillings and letting the house fill with warm cinnamon smells.  Waiting up long enough to grab a first slice before hanging up my apron for bed.

Other days, it was a way to connect with the kids.  We’d cheer (loudly), “Baking is…SCIENCE” and my little helpers would put their aprons on, measure, level and whisk.  There were flour explosions, laughing until the tears rolled out, shrieks of delight and lots of dishes.

What a year though.  It fueled me through another 12 months of uncertainty and new parent milestones.  Balanced my nerves with Jack starting his first year of preschool while the world wasn’t quite back to normal.  Calmed me through Theo’s (thankfully short lived) biting phase. Reconnected me with what I truly love, feeding people.  Those pies weren’t going to eat themselves and the four of us certainly couldn’t. For those of you in the Pie Distribution Network (PDN) thank you for your service, feedback and being open to consuming all those delicious calories.

I’ve discovered my happiest place and feel the me-ist I have in years.  If there’s a lesson here for us moms it’s: Find what fuels you, commit to it and enJOY

Some of the greatest hits shown above:

  • My favorite: Banana Cream with Nutterbutter Crust
  • Make it on repeat: Limoncello Pie
  • I made this?! Damn! Fig, Onion and Gorgonzola Galette
  • Unexpectedly delicious:  Chess Pie
  • Classic Flavors: Blueberry Lattice
