Music Is What Feelings Sound Like

Have you ever heard the saying “When Words Fail, Music Speaks”? This statement resonates with me on multiple levels. I’m a person who feels things so deeply but struggles to communicate those feelings to others as deeply as I feel them. This leaves me with a feeling of being disconnected from others at times. Whether it’s a movie scene, a greeting card, or comic strip, when someone captures a feeling I have in a far better way than I know I’ll ever be able to express it, that’s when I want to screenshot/cut out/save that sentiment so I can share it with the world and say “…this is what I was trying to say”.

That’s how I feel about music and song lyrics. I was inspired by another saying “Music Is What Feelings Sound Like” and thought I’d share some of my favorites.

SONG LYRIC

In their song “See These Bones”, alternative rock band Nada Surf sings this lyric which basically sums up my entire adult life.

“You were too tired to eat, too hungry to sleep.”

Why I love it :: If this sentiment doesn’t describe daily life in my house, I don’t know what does. My 2 year old and 4 year old have insatiable appetites and often (insert obnoxious whining voices here) “…wanna eat what Mommy is eating.” This leads to a lot more sharing of MY food than I would prefer. Like any good momma, I often share so then I lay in bed hungry and hope I fall asleep in under 10 minutes. If not – then I get to decide what ails me more – my hunger or my exhaustion.

SONG TITLE

Pixies, an alternative rock band, released this song which gained popularity in its usage in the film The Fight Club in 1999.

“Where Is My Mind?”

Why I love it :: A former co-worker/boss/friend of mine told me that every time she heard the song it reminded her of me. She was one of the first people to tell me how exceptional my mind was and how she appreciated how I process and apply information. A proud introvert, whose superpower is critical thinking, I’m always in my head…..thinking, problem solving, replaying, sometimes worrying.

You can’t pick a song title more spot on than “Where Is My Mind?” once you see my gears spinning.

SONG

The year was 2012 and we were finalizing the details for our summer destination wedding. I remember having music videos playing on the tv as we straightened up the house, and just like that, Todd and I agreed on “Wanted”, by country musician Hunter Hayes, to be the perfect song for our first dance as husband and wife. Check out these lyrics…

You know I’d fall apart without you
I don’t know how you do what you do
‘Cause everything that don’t make sense about me
Makes sense when I’m with you
Like everything that’s green, girl, I need you
But it’s more than one and one makes two
Put aside the math and the logic of it
You gotta know you’re wanted too
‘Cause I wanna wrap you up
Wanna kiss your lips
I wanna make you feel wanted
And I wanna call you mine
Wanna hold your hand forever
And never let you forget it
Yeah, I, I wanna make you feel wanted
Anyone can tell you you’re pretty, yeah
And you get that all the time, I know you do
But your beauty’s deeper than the make-up
And I wanna show you what I see tonight…
When I wrap you up
When I kiss your lips.
I wanna make you feel wanted
And I wanna call you mine
Wanna hold your hand forever
And never let you forget it
‘Cause, baby, I, I wanna make you feel wanted
As good as you make me feel
I wanna make you feel better
Better than your fairy tales
Better than your best dreams
You’re more than everything I need
You’re all I ever wanted
All I ever wanted
And I just wanna wrap you up
Wanna kiss your lips
I wanna make you feel wanted
And I wanna call you mine
Wanna hold your hand forever
And never let you forget it
Yeah, I wanna make you feel wanted
Baby, I wanna make you feel wanted
You’ll always be wanted

Why I love it :: The whole message is perfect. Whether you’re talking about a romantic interest, a friend, or your children…I love you so much I don’t ever want you to feel taken for granted or undervalued. I want you to feel WANTED/NEEDED/DESIRED. I want to do this for you. You are ‘more than’. You are ‘better than’. I want to call you mine. And I want this forever.

How can I communicate anything more true or honest to my husband? To my children? I can’t. And that’s why I love love love this song.
